The vice chairman of the Lisbon Region Winemaking Commission said on Tuesday that the wines in the region are safe from the drought in Portugal because of nighttime dew from the sea breezes.

The Lisbon region is cool and has a lot of humidity and nighttime dew, so is not suffering from the problems of the drought that are affecting other regions, Carlos da Fonseca told Lusa, adding that this also helps Lisbon region have “more harmonious maturation””.

More than 80% of mainland Portugal was suffering from extreme drought conditions in September, a month the weather office called “extremely hot”.

The Lisbon winemaking region has 103 producers and makes a million hectolitres of wine a year.
