The Maple Leafs wrapped up an important piece of the team’s future on Tuesday announcing a five-year, $58.17 million contract extension through 2023-24 for pending restricted free agent Auston Matthews.

The deal carries an average annual value of $11.634 million and, according to TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie, $54.5 million of the extension will be paid signing bonuses. Matthews will receive a $15.2 million signing bonus with $700,000 in salary in each of the first two years, followed by a $9.7 million bonus in Year 3 with a $750,000 salary and a $7.2 million bonus in both of the final years with a $7.2 million salary.
