Background

Airbnb is recruiting five volunteers for a trip to Antarctica

Written by on September 24, 2019

The idea is to collect and analyze plastic samples in one of the most isolated ecosystems in the world. The experience is completely free.

The experience is open to anyone and the organization ensures that it’s a unique experience. Together with Ocean Conservancy, Airbnb announced on Tuesday, September 24, the Gap Period program that is looking for five people for a scientific trip to Antarctica.

The experiment, to be conducted by scientist Kirstie Jones-Williams, aims to collect snow samples and study how microplastics reach the interior of the region. The idea is to counter the thesis that humans have no impact on climate change.

How? Showing how the use of plastic on other continents can pollute and contaminate one of the most isolated ecosystems in the world.

The trip plan is already known and begins in Punta Arenas, Chile, where each volunteer will have access to intensive training in glaciology courses to learn how to collect and analyze samples during the scientific experiment.

After this first phase, follows the flight to Antarctica, where the mission begins – passing through the South Pole and other iconic places in the region that you can explore.

The trip is expected to last about one month and volunteers will not receive any compensation or salary during the experience. Despite this, the organization guarantees to cover all expenses during the experiment – such as travel, accommodation and food.

To apply for one of the five vacancies, simply go to the official program page and fill out the form. The only requirement is that, in addition to being over 18, you are available to travel between November and December. Applications are open until October 8th.
